A Fantasy NaNoWriMo Novel by Melissa Osborne

Introduction

Oh, wow. Where to begin?

With the concept of NaNoWriMo, I suppose. NaNoWriMo - short for "National Novel Writing Month" - is a yearly event where, during the month of November, you attempt to write a novel. 50,000 words in 30 days. Sound tough? It is. But I digress.

I decided shortly before November of 2008 that I would participate after a few years of failed attempts. Despite already being in the planning process for a comic, I wanted to get out another story that had been floating around in my head for a long while... the story of a tall, scrawny, and delightfully sweet mage named Eravisté. His story had gone through several different incarnations in my head, each quite different than the last, and I was ready to finalize it. For over a year he had been my muse, haunting my thoughts and affecting me in ways I didn't know fictional characters could.

Finally, November rolled around, and I began to write... and write, and write, and write...

I'll be up-front with you: this story is very rough. The pacing is way, way off, the description could certainly use work, some of the dialogue is awkward at best, etc. I had no outline to go off of, and a lot of this was made up on-the-fly. But that's what NaNoWriMo's all about: pumping out crap and hoping it doesn't stink too bad. So if you don't mind reading a very rough manuscript from an amateur storycrafter, then I welcome you and hope you like what you read.

Much love,
Melissa Osborne
